Rainbow sidewalk is pretty but not green
One of the promises on which Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson was elected was to make his city the greenest in the world. I have a question. Is it green to paint sidewalks?
It's very pretty, but is it really necessary? When streets were marked with plain lines, we still managed to cross. The paint job has to be redone often; someone has a lucrative contract.
But wouldn't it be greener to plant something, or replace high maintenance plants with ones that require less?
It seems to be a sign of our times: confusing the publicity campaign with meaningful action.
